AlgaeCal®
AlgaeCal® plant calcium complex: A whole-food mineral matrix at the core of bone health support.
Plant-based calcium, grounded in clinical research
AlgaeCal® is a plant-based calcium complex derived from sustainably sourced marine algae (Mesophyllum superpositum), naturally rich in calcium, magnesium, and a spectrum of trace minerals.
Unlike conventional calcium sources, AlgaeCal® delivers minerals within a whole-food structure, together with added Vitamin D3. Its composition and use have been evaluated in published human studies assessing bone mineral density under defined study conditions.
Medford’s AlgaeCal®

The AlgaeCal® Difference
Whole-Food Mineral Composition
Conventional calcium supplements typically provide calcium in isolation from mineral sources such as limestone.
AlgaeCal® delivers calcium within a naturally occurring multi-mineral matrix derived from marine algae.
Naturally Occurring Multi-Mineral Profile
AlgaeCal® naturally provides calcium together with additional minerals, including:
Calcium · Magnesium · Boron · Copper · Manganese · Silicon · Selenium · Phosphorus · Potassium · Zinc · and naturally occurring trace elements.
These minerals are naturally present within the structure of the algae. Vitamin D3 is added to complement this mineral profile.
Sustainably Sourced
AlgaeCal® is derived from marine red algae (Mesophyllum superpositum), which naturally detaches and is sustainably harvested.
The algae is gently processed into a powder to preserve its naturally occurring mineral composition.
No chemical extraction or synthetic modification is used.
How AlgaeCal® Works
Whole-Structure Delivery
The minerals remain within the algae's natural structure, providing calcium together with naturally occurring trace minerals.
Multi-Mineral Composition
Calcium is supplied alongside magnesium and a broad spectrum of naturally occurring minerals that form part of the algae's composition.
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is included as part of the formulation to complement the naturally occurring mineral matrix.
Clinical Evidence
Published human studies have evaluated AlgaeCal® as part of bone health programmes assessing changes in bone mineral density (BMD).
12-Month Bone Mineral Density Study
A comparative effectiveness study in women over 40 evaluated changes in bone mineral density following three bone health programmes incorporating plant-sourced calcium (AlgaeCal®).
Participants were monitored using DEXA scans over 12 months.
While post-menopausal women are typically expected to lose approximately 1% of bone mineral density annually, conventional calcium supplementation has generally been shown to slow this decline rather than increase bone density.
In contrast, all three groups demonstrated increases in bone mineral density over one year, ranging from approximately 0.3% to 2.5%, with greater improvements observed in participants with higher compliance.
Kaats GR et al. Int J Med Sci. 2011;8(3):180–191.
Six-Month Clinical Study
A comparative effectiveness study involving 216 adults evaluated changes in bone mineral density following a bone health programme incorporating plant-sourced calcium (AlgaeCal®) over six months.
Positive annualised changes in bone mineral density (approximately 1.15%–2.79%) were observed compared with expected age-related decline, with greater increases associated with higher adherence.
No clinically significant adverse effects were reported. Findings are based on an open-label study without a placebo control group.
Michalek JE et al. Nutrition Journal. 2011;10:32.
Seven-Year Longitudinal Study
A seven-year longitudinal study involving 172 female consumers evaluated changes in bone mineral density during use of plant-sourced calcium (AlgaeCal®).
Consistent, statistically significant increases in bone mineral density were observed over time, with an average annualised increase of approximately 1.04% (7.3% over seven years), compared with expected age-related declines.
No clinically significant adverse effects were reported in blood chemistry measures. Findings are based on a longitudinal study design without randomised placebo control.
Kaats GR et al. J Am Coll Nutr. 2016;35(2):91–99.

FAQ
What contributes to AlgaeCal®'s bioavailability?
AlgaeCal® minerals are delivered within a natural plant matrix with a porous structure that increases surface area.
This structure supports dissolution under digestive conditions, allowing the minerals to become available for absorption. Taking AlgaeCal® with meals further supports optimal utilisation.
How is AlgaeCal® sustainably sourced?
AlgaeCal® is derived from marine algae that naturally detach before being sustainably harvested.
Its organic certification helps ensure:
• Harvest areas are regularly monitored
• Environmental impact is minimised
• Resource regeneration is supported
Is AlgaeCal® tested for heavy metals and contaminants?
Yes.
AlgaeCal®:
• Is produced in GMP-certified facilities
• Is tested for heavy metals, bacteria, and mould
• Meets strict quality and safety standards
Does AlgaeCal® cause kidney stones or arterial calcification?
Calcium metabolism varies between individuals.
AlgaeCal® provides calcium within a plant-based matrix similar to dietary sources. As with all calcium supplementation, it should be used as directed and in consultation with your doctor if you have an existing medical condition.
Does AlgaeCal® cause constipation, gas, or bloating?
AlgaeCal® is generally well tolerated and is considered non-constipating.
Its plant-based calcium naturally contains balancing minerals, including magnesium, which may support digestive tolerance.
For best results:
• Split doses across meals
• Take with food
If I am petite, do I need the full dose?
Yes.
Calcium requirements are generally determined by age and physiological needs rather than body size.
Individuals with smaller skeletal frames may still require adequate calcium intake to support bone health.
Can the capsules be opened?
Yes.
The capsules may be opened and added to semi-solid foods such as yoghurt or smoothies.
Avoid adding the contents to hot liquids, as heat may affect the stability of the added vitamins.
Is AlgaeCal® heat sensitive?
AlgaeCal® undergoes stability testing under various environmental conditions.
However, it is recommended to avoid exposure to temperatures above 45°C during storage and use.
Can I take AlgaeCal® with prescription medication?
Yes.
It is recommended to take AlgaeCal® at least 2 - 3 hours apart from prescription medication.
Do not stop prescription medication without your doctor's advice.
Can I take AlgaeCal® during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
AlgaeCal® may be used as part of nutritional support during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Consult your doctor before use.
Is the iodine content a concern for thyroid conditions?
AlgaeCal® contains only a very small amount of naturally occurring iodine (approximately 1.23 mcg per daily serving), which is significantly lower than common dietary sources.
Consult your doctor if you have a thyroid condition.
Can I take AlgaeCal® if I have a shellfish allergy?
Yes.
AlgaeCal® is derived from marine algae and does not contain shellfish.
