The therapeutic effects of chaste tree berry, have been attributed to its indirect effects on various neurotransmitters and hormones. It seems to affect dopamine, acetylcholine and opioid receptors. Its dopaminergic activity inhibits prolactin release. This inhibition of prolactin release in women seems to normalise defects in the menstrual cycle.
Chaste tree berry has been successfully used to alleviate conditions that cause hypermenorrhea (excessive uterine bleeding), polymenorrhea (abnormally frequent menstruation), PMS, and acne.
Dong quai’s activity has been attributed to its, ferulic acid and ligustilide constituent. The ferulic acid component appears to have oestrogen agonist activity and the ligustilide seems to have an antispasmodic effect. Dong Quai has been shown to coordinate uterine contractions, thereby alleviating dysmenorrhea and PMS.
Red clover contains isoflavones, (phyto-oestrogens structurally similar to oestrogens). These isoflavones lack oestrogen-like effects in breast tissue, ovaries and uterus but show preferential binding for oestrogen receptors, found in the vascular endothelium, brain, bone and heart. Bone density support comes from the isoflavones stimulating osteoblast function.
Red clover has also shown affinity for opioid receptors, which regulate temperature, mood, and hormonal levels, which may also explain the effects on menopausal symptoms.
Pau d’arco has been shown to have antifungal activity against various Candida species, including Candida albicans.
Vitamin B6 is required for amino acid metabolism and the synthesis of neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin and dopamine are known to affect an individual’s mood in a positive way and may assist in PMS and hormone related mood changes.
Zinc is the second most abundant trace element in the body. It is required by three hundred different enzymes as a catalyst. Low levels of zinc may be a nonspecific feature of inflammation. It has also been shown in research to help prevent cervical dysplasia.
Folic acid has been shown to help prevent cervical dysplasia. The body’s requirement for folic acid doubles during pregnancy and deficiency can cause low birth weight. Folic Acid helps prevent miscarriage and lowers the risk of neural tube birth defects during pregnancy.
