A lot of people notice something's missing when they take Barlean's Seriously Delicious Omega-3. And what's missing is those dreaded fish burps. That's great news - but what's even better news is WHY you don't get the fish burps.

Fish burps are a sign that your body hasn't properly absorbed your fish oil supplement. That's not good news, because we can only benefit from what we absorb into the bloodstream. We make Seriously Delicious Omega-3 with a proprietary process that turns high quality purified fish oil into creamy, delicious treats... that are also highly absorbable.

So, if you're looking for a fish oil that gives you MORE of the Omega-3s you're after, you've come to the right place. And it tastes great, too.

What's the secret to getting more out of your supplements?

Emulsification.

Barlean's has long been known for their Seriously Delicious® emulsified fish and flax. Why is that so important? While many of us may think we absorb all the nutrients in the supplements we take, that isn’t necessarily true. Barlean’s uses a proprietary process (not just an ingredient!) to emulsify their fish oils and other nutrient-dense oils, turning them into creamy delicious treats. This is important to you for three reasons:

1. Enhanced absorption
By emulsifying the nutritional oil in their Seriously Delicious products, they make the nutrients in them more bioavailable (absorbable) to your body. That means you get more nutritional value out of every spoonful. How much more? Barlean’s Seriously Delicious® fish oils are more absorbable than typical oils in liquid form or softgel form. In fact, their Omega-3 fish oils are 3X more absorbable.

2. No fish burps
We hate fish burps too! Oils can be hard to digest, and those burps are a sign your body is having trouble. Because you can absorb the emulsified fish oils in Seriously Delicious supplements better, you avoid those gross after-burps.

3. Unbeatable taste
The creamy texture and delicious taste of Seriously Delicious products means even kids will ask for their fish oils. Hard to believe, but it’s true!

So how does emulsification work?
It works like this: Our bodies aren't really great at absorbing oils. Ever felt queasy after eating something greasy or oily? That's your body's way of saying it's having a hard time processing it. When we consume oil or fat, our bodies automatically begin to break it down with digestive enzymes and bile in order to emulsify and micronise it (mix it with water and reduce it into smaller, easier-to-absorb molecules).

Once emulsified, these molecules travel down into our intestines, where they are absorbed through the intestinal wall.

Barlean’s Seriously Delicious products are pre-emulsified, so the body doesn’t need to work as hard (and potentially lose valuable nutrients doing so). This process allows you to more quickly and efficiently absorb the nutrients into your bloodstream. And better absorption means you're actually getting more of the nutrients you're after!

FAQ

How can Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil be 9 times more bio-available than standard fish oil?
Barlean’s proprietary ‘Swirl Technology’ significantly reduces the size of the fish oil molecules. This allows the oil to more efficiently pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream.

Clinical research has shown the total percentage of oil that reaches the bloodstream is 9 times greater with Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil than with the same dose of standard fish oil.

Theoretically, to equal the amount of Omega-3 delivered to the bloodstream by only 2 teaspoons of Seriously Delicious Omega-3, could take up to 20 standard fish oil capsules!

How is Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil made?
Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil is wild-caught, cold-filtered and left in the natural triglyceride form. Then bottled, induction sealed for freshness, and 3rd party tested for purity, potency and toxicity.
What are the sustainable fishing practices used by Barlean’s?
As an environmentally responsible fish oil manufacturer, the Barlean’s family is passionate about protecting waterways and the fish species that reside in them and therefore offers transparency into their fishing practices. For Barlean’s, choosing the right fish from the right locations is key.

Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oils are:
Harvested from the freshest waters: Derived from fish that are wild-caught from deep-sea, cold waters, entirely in their native habitats of the Arctic, Norwegian, Peruvian and Pacific Oceans.

Sourced from the freshest fish: Barlean’s fish oils are comprised of omega 3-rich anchovy, sardine, cod and mackerel. Small, short-lived fish are naturally a very clean source of fish oil.

Processed to yield the freshest oil: Freshly caught fish are flash-frozen and rapidly transported for proprietary processing, ultra-purification, molecular distillation, bottling and distribution.

Is Barlean’s really ‘Organoleptic’ about quality?
Organoleptic? Yes, it’s actually a word and Barlean’s really does it. Organoleptic testing is a form of testing that uses taste, smell, sight and mouth feel to determine if a product is good enough. Barlean’s inspects product from each batch to ensure product seals, freshness, expiry dates and labels are correct.

To ensure quality, what should one look for when purchasing a fish oil supplement?

Third-party test results for purity and freshness
A third-party certificate of analysis indicates the levels of purity from environmental toxins, and the oxidation level (or freshness) of the oil.

Each and every batch of Barlean’s “Fresh Catch® Oils” is third-party laboratory tested, and guaranteed to contain the dosage and potency of EPA and DHA listed on the label.

Manufacturing standards
Is the fish oil manufactured according to international quality standards? Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 fish oils undergo molecular distillation and ultra-purification, resulting in pharmaceutical-grade fish oil.

Triglyceride molecular form
Research has shown that triglyceride form omega-3s are up to 70% better absorbed than synthetic ethyl ester omegas.

What is the Barlean’s FIVE LAYER oxidation protection system?

This system guarantees the freshest, most nutritious fish oil via the following parameters:

1) Proprietary Fresh Catch® processing technology.

2) Black opaque bottles.

3) Nitrogen flushed bottles.

4) FreshLok™ antioxidant protection.

5) Recommended refrigeration for liquids.

Does Barlean's Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil contain mercury or other toxins?
Raw fish oils contain environmental toxins like mercury that can accumulate in a fish during its life span, but these toxins can be virtually eliminated with the use of high quality raw materials and advanced distillation technologies.
Is Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil ‘pharmaceutical grade’ and what does this really mean?

Yes! ‘Pharmaceutical grade’ fish oil is defined as purified, and deodorised fatty oil obtained from fish. This term is used to describe the quality of fish oil, encompassing purity (minimal detected contaminants/toxins such as heavy metals, PCBs, and dioxins); freshness (free of oxidative rancidity); and potency (amount of omega-3s contained).

To further ensure the quality of Barlean’s fish oil, they produce their fish oil in the triglyceride form, unlike many ethyl ester fish oils on the market today. True triglyceride form ensures that the body recognises and absorbs the omega-3 essential fatty acids it needs for optimal health, for consistent results.

What does natural ‘triglyceride form’ mean? Will it ‘raise my triglycerides’?

‘Triglyceride Form’ refers to the molecular form of the fatty acids found in Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil products. In nature, fats are found in triglyceride form.

These triglycerides, being a natural form (as opposed to the new-to-nature ethyl ester form produced by many manufacturers) are easily assimilated through the digestive process, supporting increased absorption and optimal utilisation of the health-promoting omega-3s EPA and DHA.

‘Raising one’s triglycerides’ actually refers to a COMPLETELY different type of triglyceride. These triglycerides are not from dietary fats, but are produced in the liver in response to high amounts of insulin secreted into the blood stream. High insulin levels in the blood are the result of excessive carbohydrates that have not been used for energy.

What are the ‘other’ omega-3s listed on the label?
The ‘other’ omega-3s listed refer to omega-3 fatty acids (other than EPA & DHA) that naturally exist in fish oil in low levels. These ‘other’ omega-3s include fatty acids such as DPA (docospentaenoic acid) and ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid). These fats are involved in essential fatty acid metabolic pathways in the body.

EPA and DHA are the best-studied omega-3 fats, and are considered the most functional omega-3s.

Can Barlean’s Fish oil be used by individuals allergic to fish or fish protein?
In theory, fish proteins should be effectively removed in processing. However, it is certainly possible for fish oils to have small traces of protein.
What are omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), and why are they needed?
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are polyunsaturated fats that our bodies need, but cannot produce and must be consumed through food or supplements.

The two families of EFAs are omega-3 and omega-6, and need to be consumed in a balanced ratio to ensure proper eicosanoids production. Eicosanoids are hormone-like compounds that affect virtually every system in the body: They regulate pain, help maintain proper blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and promote fluid nerve transmission.

Omega-3s have become largely absent from the food chain, while omega-6s have become overabundant even in the healthiest diets. The most beneficial omega-3s are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) which can easily be obtained from Barlean’s Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil.

Can food provide enough omega-3s?
Fish is the primary food source of the omega-3s EPA and DHA, but most individuals don’t eat enough fish on a regular basis. Even those who eat fish several times a week aren’t getting enough EPA and DHA because much of the fish consumed today is farm-raised and lacks significant amounts of EPA and DHA.

Also, many people are increasingly avoiding fish due to growing concerns about environmental toxins in fish (such as mercury, dioxins, PCBs, etc.).

Several factors that can lead to a reduced absorption of EFAs: Age, poor diet, alcohol consumption, some prescription drugs, compromised immune status, and a diet high in saturated and/or trans-fatty acids.

People with health challenges or those who are currently deficient, often require a minimum of 2 to 4 grams a day of EPA and DHA, which is difficult to obtain from fish alone.

What is the importance of balancing the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio?
Over the past 100 years, changes in the food supply in Western nations have altered the type of dietary fatty acids we consume, leading to a dramatic increase in the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. This is known to influence a poor nutritional state that contributes to higher incidences of many chronic diseases.

To address this omega-6 : omega-3 imbalance, current recommendations suggest increasing the consumption of pre-formed omega-3s EPA and DHA in fish and/or fish oils, increasing intake of ALA (an omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid found in vegetables, flax, fruits) and decreasing intake of LA (the omega-6 linoleic acid in meat, dairy, eggs, vegetable oils).

What is the difference between fish oil and flax seed oil?
Omega-3 essential fatty acids fall into 2 major categories: Plant-derived (flax seed oil, containing alpha linolenic acid, or ALA) or marine-derived (fish oil, containing both EPA and DHA).

The human conversion of (plant-derived) ALA to EPA and DHA is somewhat slow and can be inhibited by various conditions such as a diet high in omega-6; trans-fatty acids such as fast foods and baked goods; alcohol intake; certain health conditions; and vitamin and mineral deficiencies (B3, B6, C, zinc, magnesium).

Fish, on the other hand, is a direct source of EPA and DHA.
